Grid connection questions,
answered plainly

The questions land finders, developers and investors ask us most about getting power to a site in the UK.

How long does it take to get a grid connection in the UK?

It depends on the voltage level, the area and your place in the queue. Connection dates for new transmission-level projects in many constrained zones are now 2030 or later. Smaller connections to the local distribution network can be quicker, but they still vary a lot from one substation to the next. The date is set by queue position and the reinforcement the network needs, not by how good the site looks otherwise. Two neighbouring sites can have connection windows years apart.

What is the UK equivalent of an interconnection study?

You apply to the network operator and receive a connection offer that sets out the capacity, the date and the cost. For smaller projects that is the local distribution network operator (DNO), such as UK Power Networks. For large projects it involves the transmission owner and NESO, which run their own studies before any approval. A Grid Signal screen is done before you apply, so you go into those conversations already knowing the likely constraints.

What is substation headroom and why does it matter?

Headroom is the spare capacity at a substation to take new demand or new generation. A site can only connect as much as the network nearby can carry. A battery storage project needs enough capacity to import from the grid and export back to it, and the distance to the connection point adds cable cost. Grid Signal holds headroom figures for more than 5,000 substations across all six distribution network operator groups in Great Britain, built from the operators' own published data, and shows the nearest connection point, its distance and the headroom there. Figures are indicative and should be confirmed with the operator.

How does the connection queue affect my site?

Other projects already in the queue at the same substations use up capacity ahead of you. If several data centres or battery projects want to build in the same area, each one pushes the others back. Queue reform is also removing speculative projects, which can change where you stand. Grid Signal reports the queue and the likely delay at your nearest connection points.

How much grid capacity does an electric fleet depot need?

It depends on the number of vehicles, the charger size and how many charge at once. A depot charging several heavy electric trucks at the same time can need several megawatts, which is often more than the local network has spare. Unless the operator moves to a site with more capacity, the depot usually needs network reinforcement first. Screening the depot location before committing to a vehicle programme avoids finding this out late.

What if the network operator is already reinforcing the grid near my site?

That is usually a good sign, because it means capacity may increase later. But reinforcement timing is uncertain, and late discovery of upgrades can change project costs. Treat it as something to confirm with the network operator rather than something to assume. Grid Signal flags reinforcement exposure as one of the screening flags in each report.

Should I wait for the grid or generate my own power on site?

With long waits for connections, some large developers add on-site generation and battery storage to reduce how much they rely on the grid. It rarely removes the need for a connection altogether, and the economics differ a lot between sites. The right answer depends on the site's grid position and your demand, which is why screening the grid first is the sensible starting point.

What does a Grid Signal screen not tell me?

A screen is a first-pass read, not a connection offer. It tells you whether a site looks worth a feasibility study, using a Grid Signal Index score, the nearest connection point, headroom, queue position and screening flags. It does not replace a formal application to the network operator. If a site passes, the analyst-led Full Project Assessment covers DNO capacity and timeline confirmation and connection economics.
